Halloween is just around the corner, so for the month of October there will be a spooky theme in Card Discussions...namely, masks! In October, if there's not a mask involved, we're not interested. So, without further adieu, on to Card Discussion!
Most people hail the Chaos Soldier as the most powerful Ritual Monster. Most people don't know about the Masked Hellraiser.
The Masked Hellraiser is a Secret Rare from the Spell of Mask set. In the comics, a team of Duelists known only as the Mask of Light and the Mask of Darkness challenge Kaiba and Yugi to a two-on-two duel. When the Masks summon the Masked Hellraiser, it seems invincible. Even when Kaiba and Yugi use a discard combo to special summon Blue-Eyes White Dragon, the Masks laugh at Blue-Eyes' lower attack power. Only by using the attack-reducing powers of the Gilfer Demon are Kaiba and Yugi able to defeat the Masked Hellraiser.
In the real card game, the Masked Hellraiser is the strongest Ritual Monster in the game. Its attack power rises above that of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Chaos Soldier, but because of this, its defense is lowered to 1800. Luckily, this usually isn't a problem.
However, rather than discussing other aspects of the card(it's strong! Huzzah!), I thought it would be more interesting to discuss the disadvantages of having a lower defense value. After all, if there were no disadvantages, there would be no reason to use the Chaos Soldier(save the difficulty of finding 3 Secret Rares...)
First of all, simple cards that flip monsters into Defense position will take card of the Hellraiser without difficulty. The base attack for a Level 4 monster is 1900, so it will be easy enough to take the Hellraiser out if this happens. Also, cards like SC-49: Burst Breath that destroy all monsters with a certain defense value or lower will be able to safely destroy the Hellraiser without damaging their own monsters.
Of course, even though certain decks may play such cards, cards like those mentioned earlier aren't commonplace in most decks. In most ways, the Masked Hellraiser is better than the Chaos Soldier. However, the Chaos Soldier has one more distinct advantage, and that is the fact that it is a "Name Card."
I've just invented the term "Name Card." A Name Card is a card that is popular, though perhaps underpowered, and thus is mentioned on other cards. Good examples of Name Cards are the Black Magician, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Buster Blader, Kuribo, and, of course, the Chaos Soldier. The Chaos Soldier is a Name Card; it has been mentioned before(it can fuse with a Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon to become the Master of Dragon Knight) and it will probably be mentioned again sometime in the future.
However, if you want something that simply has a high attack value, the Masked Hellraiser is definitely the way to go! Good luck on finding them, though! ^_^
